Atiesh

Greatstaff of the Guardian

A legacy of Guardians. Forty-two shattered pieces. One final stand above Dalaran.

For thousands of years, one staff passed from Guardian to Guardian, the protectors of Azeroth against the Burning Legion. Born from the “seed of hate” and said to grant its wielder “power unending,” Atiesh outlived every one of them. It killed the mages who tried to study it, shattered into forty-two pieces, was hunted by the Scourge, and was finally broken in half in the last battle of Dalaran.

Atiesh is not remembered for a single conquest. Its history is a line of succession repeatedly broken and rebuilt: Guardian to Guardian, Medivh to a sealed vault, fragments to a restored staff, and finally Khadgar to an uncertain future. Every stage asks the same question—whether power inherited from a compromised past can still be used to protect the world.

The Staff of the Guardians

No one knows when Atiesh was created. What is known is that it was forged from the “seed of hate” and wielded by each Guardian of Tirisfal in turn, including Aegwynn, until the line ended with her son Medivh. That makes the staff thousands of years old.

Its age matters because the staff functioned as more than a personal weapon. The office of Guardian concentrated extraordinary magical responsibility in one chosen protector, and Atiesh moved with that office. Each bearer inherited an object already marked by predecessors whose victories, failures, and secrets had shaped the institution.

Atiesh could open portals to Karazhan, Medivh's tower. Ravens were drawn to whoever carried it, and the staff could grant its wielder the form of a raven—the bird that became Medivh's symbol. These powers connected it to movement between places and identities: a key to the Guardian's home, a sign recognised by the natural world, and a means of transformation.

That combination made Atiesh immediately recognisable without requiring ornament on the scale of a great blade. Its authority came from continuity. To see the staff was to see the office behind it, even when the person carrying it would become the greatest threat the Guardians had ever failed to prevent.

The Last Guardian

Atiesh — Medivh's legacy passes into an age without Guardians

Medivh was the last of the Guardians, and Atiesh was the focus of his power. But the Last Guardian was secretly possessed by the spirit of Sargeras, the very enemy the Guardians existed to fight. Under that influence, he opened the way for the orcish Horde into Azeroth.

The contradiction transformed the meaning of every symbol attached to him. Karazhan, ravens, and Atiesh could no longer represent protection without also recalling corruption from within. The staff had passed faithfully down a line created to resist the Legion, only to arrive in the hands of a Guardian whose body had become a path for its master.

Medivh was finally killed in Karazhan by Anduin Lothar and his own apprentice, Khadgar. The Guardian line died with him. The staff did not.

That survival made Atiesh a problem as much as a relic. It contained the prestige and power of the old order, but it was also inseparable from the catastrophe of its final bearer. With no new Guardian to receive it, the chain of succession ended. The object remained after the institution that had given it purpose was gone.

The Curse of Dalaran

After Medivh's death, the Kirin Tor found the staff and brought it to Dalaran. A series of tragic events followed: every Kirin Tor mage who came into contact with Atiesh died.

The mages had inherited an object they could neither safely study nor simply ignore. As scholars, they were drawn to the last great relic of the Guardians. As custodians of Dalaran, they had to recognise that curiosity carried a lethal cost. The staff that had once signalled legitimate magical authority became something the greatest city of mages feared to touch.

Atiesh was sealed behind barriers of magic, and the mage Angela Dosantos was appointed to watch over it. The most powerful staff of its age had become a prisoner, locked away by the city that feared it.

This confinement reversed its original role. A Guardian once carried Atiesh freely across Azeroth and used it to open a way to Karazhan. In Dalaran, layers of protection were designed to ensure it could go nowhere at all. The city preserved the relic while admitting that preservation was not the same as mastery.

Forty-Two Pieces

Atiesh — the shattered staff becomes the centre of a race across Azeroth

After the Third War, when Archimonde destroyed Dalaran, the staff was lost and shattered, probably by the failsafe of the magical barrier that held it. Its forty-two pieces were scattered across Azeroth.

The destruction changed the problem without ending it. A single cursed relic could be guarded. Forty-two fragments created forty-two opportunities for the staff's power to be recovered, stolen, or misunderstood. The story ceased to be about containment and became a race to control the pieces.

The Archlich Kel'Thuzad set out to find them and rebuild the staff. The Highborne archmage Tarsis Kir-Moldir, who had once wielded Atiesh briefly, gathered twenty pieces before the Scourge found him. In the end, Kel'Thuzad held every fragment and entrusted them to his lieutenants in Naxxramas, except one: the base of the staff, found by Brann Bronzebeard. Brann then lost it to C'Thun in Ahn'Qiraj.

When Naxxramas appeared over the Eastern Plaguelands, the Argent Dawn fought to keep the staff out of Kel'Thuzad's hands and apparently succeeded. In the original raid campaign, players gathered forty Splinters of Atiesh from the archlich's lieutenants, recovered the head from Kel'Thuzad, and sought the base held by C'Thun.

The reconstruction linked the era's greatest threats. Naxxramas held the splinters and head; Ahn'Qiraj held the base; Stratholme held the demon that had to be defeated to cleanse the completed staff. Restoring Atiesh required confronting the Scourge, an Old God, and the corruption within the relic itself.

Restored, Then Broken

Meryl Winterstorm sent Garona Halforcen to recover the base from the remains of the Old God C'Thun. She succeeded and gave it to Med'an, her son, who restored the whole staff.

From the war in Draenor onward, Atiesh was carried by Khadgar, Medivh's former apprentice. How he obtained it was never explained, because it had last been seen with Med'an. The most likely answer is that Med'an gave it to him, but the transfer itself remains outside the story that has been shown.

Khadgar was a fitting bearer precisely because he was not another Guardian. He had witnessed the fall of the office from inside Karazhan and helped stop his master. Carrying Atiesh allowed him to preserve part of that inheritance without pretending the old system could simply continue unchanged.

Atiesh's story then returned to Dalaran, the city that had once feared and imprisoned it. When Xal'atath and the nerubians of Azj-Kahet attacked, the staff was snapped in half as Khadgar fought the Harbinger, shortly before she destroyed the city with the Dark Heart. Whether any part of Atiesh survived is still unknown.

The symmetry is severe. Dalaran had survived one destruction in the age when Atiesh shattered into fragments. In the city's later fall, the restored staff broke with it. The relic and the city were linked first by fear, then by loss, and finally by a battle in which both appeared to reach an ending.

Legacy in World of Warcraft

Atiesh was the first legendary caster item in World of Warcraft. In original Naxxramas, players gathered forty Splinters of Atiesh from Kel'Thuzad's lieutenants, the Staff Head from Kel'Thuzad himself, and the Base from C'Thun. The staff was then cleansed in Stratholme by slaying a demon also named Atiesh.

Different caster classes received versions suited to them, but every completed staff carried the prestige of a quest spanning multiple raids. It also retained one of the relic's defining powers by opening a portal to Karazhan. The reward connected the player not only to the Guardians' history but also to a place central to Medivh's life.

The staff still remembers its master. In Karazhan, the ghost of Medivh's father, Nielas Aran, reacts to players carrying it: “Where did you get that?! Did HE send you??” In Return to Karazhan, the Shade of Medivh recognises it as his own relic. Those moments treat Atiesh as more than equipment. Characters inside the world recognise the history the player is carrying.

That history remains unresolved. The staff has been inherited, cursed, sealed, shattered, reforged, and broken again. Its fragments have already proved capable of surviving the destruction of Dalaran once. Until the story establishes what happened after the city's latest fall, Atiesh remains suspended between final ruin and another possible restoration.
