WoW Forever Warlock PvP Guide: SM/Ruin, Pets, Matchups & Macros
A level-60 SM/Ruin field guide built around control windows: exact 30/0/21 allocation, pet decisions, matchup counterplay, macros and evidence limits.

The verdict: control creates the cast window
SM/Ruin remains a coherent PvP plan because its pieces solve one another's problems: instant Affliction pressure forces reactions, Fear or Seduction creates the room for a 2.5-second Shadow Bolt, and Ruin converts a crit into a genuine finish. The reference split is 30/0/21. It is not a claim about Drakedog's exact historical spec; “Drakedog-style” describes the recognizable Succubus/Felhunter control-and-burst style associated with early Warlock PvP videos. MODEL_ASSUMPTION
Forever changes the texture of the build. Shadow Mastery is back to 10% in the October 15 notes and build 70707; Improved Shadow Bolt is personal, lasts 12 seconds and has no charges; Molten Skin gives the build a defensive layer Classic SM/Ruin lacked. But the modeled max-rank Shadow Bolt base is much lower, so spell power carries more of the result. That makes the build gear-sensitive, not obsolete.
Quick decision flow
The exact 30/0/21 build
The listed rows total 30 Affliction, 0 Demonology and 21 Destruction. The tier gates also pass the stated five-points-per-row arithmetic. The current public build-70707 talent page confirms the named talents and ranks, but this review did not import a machine-readable prerequisite graph; treat individual edge prerequisites as requiring a final in-client click-through before launch.
| Tree | Talent | Rank | Job in the build | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Affliction | Suppression | 3/5 | Reach the modeled 99% PvP hit cap from a 96% base; two more points are not valued in this model | CLASSIC_UNCHANGED / CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Affliction | Improved Corruption | 5/5 | Instant Corruption and +10% damage for pressure while moving | CONFIRMED_FOREVER |
| Affliction | Grim Reach | 2/2 | +20% Affliction range; modeled Fear 24 yd and Death Coil 36 yd | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Affliction | Improved Drains | 3/3 | +20% Drain Life in the supplied build | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Affliction | Amplify Curse | 1/1 | Gateway to Curse of Exhaustion; amplifies the next eligible Curse/Bane | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Affliction | Improved Bane of Agony | 2/2 | +10% Agony | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Affliction | Malevolence | 5/5 | +5% Shadow critical strike chance; replaces the old Destruction crit allocation | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Affliction | Curse of Exhaustion | 1/1 | 30% slow for 12 seconds | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Affliction | Nightfall | 2/2 | 4% Shadow Trance chance from eligible effects | CLASSIC_UNCHANGED |
| Affliction | Siphon Life | 1/1 | Passive pressure and the point needed to reach 25 in Affliction | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Affliction | Shadow Mastery | 5/5 | +10% Shadow damage or life drained | CONFIRMED_FOREVER / CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Destruction | Improved Shadow Bolt | 5/5 | Crits add 20% Shadow damage taken from your attacks for 12 sec | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Destruction | Bane | 5/5 | Reduces Shadow Bolt to 2.5 sec | CLASSIC_UNCHANGED |
| Destruction | Molten Skin | 5/5 | -10% damage taken in the supplied client data | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Destruction | Ruin | 5/5 | +100% critical bonus damage for Destruction spells | CONFIRMED_FOREVER |
| Destruction | Shadowburn | 1/1 | Instant finisher on a 15 sec modeled cooldown | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Total | 30/0/21 | 51 points | validated sum |
The default recommendation is Molten Skin. A caster-duel variant can trade its five points for Intensity 3/3 + Agonizing Flames 2/3, exchanging general mitigation for pushback resistance and Destruction damage. That swap is an editorial option, not a solved meta.
Classic SM/Ruin versus Forever
| Lever | Classic reference | Forever evidence | Practical reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shadow Mastery | +10% Shadow | 2/4/6/8/10% after Oct. 15 | Restored to the full 10%; do not use the earlier 5% draft |
| Shadow crit talent | Devastation +5% | Malevolence +5% in Affliction | Crit budget moves trees |
| Ruin | 1 point | 5 ranks for the same final +100% bonus | More expensive pathing |
| Improved Shadow Bolt | 20%, four shared charges | 20%, 12 sec, no charges, your attacks | Stronger personal follow-through, weaker cross-class synergy |
| Shadow Bolt r10 | 482–538, 0.857 coefficient | modeled 253–283, 0.857 | SP contributes a much larger share; exact base needs in-game confirmation |
| DoTs | Corruption coefficient 1.0 | modeled Corruption 1.2; Agony 1.6 | More mobile pressure, based on client observations |
| Defense | no comparable 30/0/21 layer | Molten Skin -10% | meaningful survivability if active as read |
| PvP crit | full | full after Oct. 8 bug fix | Blizzard-confirmed server fix |
At 600 SP, the supplied model produces a 2,065 Shadow Bolt crit under ISB and roughly 3.4k average damage in a six-second chain, with a near-6k all-crit ceiling. These are illustrative outputs before resistance, hit checks, absorption and target health—not promised live damage.
Pet choice: do not outsource the decision to habit
| Pet | What it buys | Preferred targets | Counterplay to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Felhunter | Spell Lock and Devour Magic; pressure without breaking Fear by default | Mage, Priest, Shaman, Paladin, caster Druid | Fake casts, pet control, disposable buffs covering the key dispel |
| Succubus / Sayaad | Seduction creates a cast window or controls a second player | Melee, world PvP, uneven fights | Damage breaks Seduction; shared-DR status with Fear is unresolved |
| Imp | Ranged pet and Phase Shift utility | niche totem pressure or low-risk ranged support | fragile, lacks improved talents in this build |
| Voidwalker | Sacrifice-style emergency value | rare defensive swap | limited pressure and no improved Voidwalker investment |
Keep the pet passive until you deliberately send it. The purpose is to preserve CC, not to win a pet DPS race. Improved Felhunter and Improved Sayaad are inaccessible at 0 Demonology, so Spell Lock remains modeled at 30 seconds and Seduction receives no build-specific extension.

Openers, sequencing and diminishing returns
Against a caster, start at maximum range with a pre-cast Shadow Bolt when the situation permits, then establish Corruption and Bane of Agony. Hold Spell Lock for the cast that changes the exchange—a heal, Polymorph or critical setup—not automatically for the first bar you see. Against melee, Exhaustion plus instant DoTs buys space; Seduction or Fear is the permission to cast, and Death Coil is the emergency reset or finish.
The supplied burst sequence is Shadow Bolt → Shadow Bolt → Shadowburn + Death Coil, with the first crit potentially enabling ISB. A Nightfall instant belongs near the finish, where denying reaction time matters more than padding an opener.
Forever's Fear/Seduction DR categories were not published in the reviewed material. Classic's 100% → 50% → 25% → immunity sequence with a 15-second reset is a planning baseline only. Treat Fear/Seduction sharing as an experiment: time the second effect, record its duration, and do not publish the result as universal until repeated. Death Coil is historically Horror rather than Fear DR, but that also deserves an in-client check. MODEL_ASSUMPTION

Matchup matrix
| Opponent | Editorial read | Win condition | Their counterplay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | favorable with distance | Exhaustion and DoTs before contact; CC creates each Bolt window; Coil after a fear-break tool | Intercept, Hamstring, Pummel and Berserker Rage collapse cast time |
| Rogue | volatile 50/50 | survive the stun chain, deny restealth with DoTs, then Coil/Fear into distance | opener control, Kick, Blind and reset timing |
| Mage | unfavorable without Felhunter | Devour Barrier, lock Frost or Arcane at the decisive cast, keep Corruption through Blink | Counterspell, freezes, burst during lockout, Ice Block reset |
| Priest | favorable into Shadow; long into healer | Devour shield, lock Mind Blast or the big heal, Tongues into hard-cast healing | Scream, dispels, Fear Ward and execute pressure |
| Hunter | unfavorable at range | break line of sight or enter dead zone, Fear pet, maintain DoTs | Scatter, Concussive, traps and mana denial; WotF is unavailable during Scatter in Oct. notes |
| Paladin | attritional | Devour Freedom, Tongues, lock Holy Light, save CC for after immunity | Bubble, Cleanse, HoJ and repeated resets |
| Shaman | difficult | remove Tremor cheaply, bait Grounding with an instant, lock Lava Burst or heal | Tremor, Grounding, Purge and short-CD Earth Shock |
| Druid | favorable if contained | DoTs deny clean resets; lock Regrowth; Fear remains the supplied plan across forms | shifting breaks roots/snares, mobility and self-healing |
| Warlock | pet-control mirror | win the first meaningful Spell Lock, protect Shadow Ward, lead with non-Curse pressure into Orc | Shatter Curse, WotF, Devour and Coil timing |
Races, gear and professions
| Race | PvP read | What is actually supported |
|---|---|---|
| Undead | S estimate | WotF breaks Charm/Fear/Sleep; October notes remove use during Scatter and later reduce Touch of the Grave ICD to 15 sec |
| Orc | S estimate | Hardiness, Blood Fury, Shatter Curse and restored Command create strong anti-control and mirror value; file and note values conflict in places |
| Troll | A estimate | Berserking duration moved to 15 sec in Oct. 26 notes; haste magnitude remains context-dependent |
| Human | S estimate | Will to Survive removes stuns; Ruthless is +1% crit in Oct. 26 notes |
| Gnome | A estimate | Escape Artist and Eureka support kiting and a short non-periodic burst window; verify exact spell coverage |
Prioritize Stamina ≥ spell power > hit until the modeled +3% PvP requirement > crit > Intellect. The supplied progression runs from Shadow Wrath/Stamina greens through the blue and epic Honor sets, PvP trinket, then rank-14 weapons; names and acquisition details should be checked against the live vendor. Engineering is the expected PvP profession only if its Classic gadgets exist unchanged—this source does not prove that they do.
| Stage | Target | Practical priority | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-BiS | Shadow Wrath or Stamina/SP greens, then sturdy dungeon cloth | survive the opener before optimizing crit | MODEL_ASSUMPTION |
| Blue Honor set | Champion's / Lieutenant Commander's Threads | coherent stamina baseline | system CONFIRMED_FOREVER; item names CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| Epic Honor set | Warlord's / Field Marshal's Threads | upgrade through the supplied rank schedule | system CONFIRMED_FOREVER; names/schedule CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX |
| PvP trinket | rank-2 acquisition in the supplied plan | first mandatory control break | CONFIRMED_FOREVER system |
| Rank-14 weapon | High Warlord's Spellblade or War Staff | final spell-power weapon target | CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX; verify vendor live |
Duo and trio composition
| Team | Estimate | Why it fits SM/Ruin | What opponents attack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warlock + Priest | S | dispels, layered Fear and healing let the Warlock preserve Coil | shared control DR, pet pressure and healer lockouts |
| Warlock + Rogue | S | Sap/Blind/Seduction can isolate one target while DoTs deny resets | overlapping DR and damage breaking Seduction |
| Warlock + Warrior | A | Mortal Strike plus Exhaustion pressures the healer's positioning | peel the Warrior, then interrupt the Warlock's long casts |
| Warlock + Shaman | A | Purge, Tremor and Earth Shock cover common Warlock counters | Grounding/Tremor management and limited hard defensive resets |
| Warlock / Rogue / Priest | S+ | the supplied “CC wombo” has several independent setup tools | coordinated dispels and DR-aware defensive rotation |
| Warlock / Warrior / Priest | S | Mortal Strike pressure with Fear and stable healing | kite the Warrior, punish the Warlock during Pummel windows |
All tiers above are pre-live editorial estimates. Improved Shadow Bolt is modeled as benefiting only the Warlock's own attacks, so the Rogue or Warrior does not inherit the old shared Shadow-vulnerability synergy.

Evidence notes and open checks
- Confirmed: October 8 PvP crit fix; October 15 Shadow Mastery 10%; October 26 racial updates.
CONFIRMED_FOREVER - Observed in client/build sources: personal charge-free ISB, Malevolence, Molten Skin, pet spell values and many max-rank spell numbers. These show data, not necessarily active server behavior.
CLIENT_BETA_HOTFIX - Unresolved: Fear/Seduction DR, Curse plus Bane coexistence, macro conditionals, engineering items, low-rank coefficient penalty, exact Touch of the Grave proc, Shatter Curse 5% versus 15%.
