Cairne Bloodhoof: the duel Garrosh could only win with poison
Cairne Bloodhoof was the oldest leader of the Horde.
2:17
Summary
Cairne Bloodhoof helped lead the tauren from the edge of extinction to a home above the plains of Mulgore. Years later, when he believed Garrosh Hellscream had taken the Horde too far, the old chieftain answered with a final challenge. He entered the Mak'gora as the stronger warrior, but poison on Gorehowl turned a duel of honor into his death.
Chapter I
BEFORE THUNDER BLUFF
Before Thunder Bluff rose above Mulgore, the tauren were being hunted toward extinction by centaur warbands. Cairne Bloodhoof was already one of their oldest leaders and most formidable warriors, but strength alone had not secured his people a future. That changed when he met a young orc named Thrall.
Fighting side by side, Cairne and Thrall broke the centaur warbands and led the tauren into Mulgore. For the first time in generations, they had a home. Thunder Bluff became the visible proof of that deliverance, and the bond between the old tauren and the young orc was forged in the struggle that made it possible.
Chapter II
THE WARNING THRALL LEFT BEHIND
When Thrall chose Garrosh Hellscream to lead in his absence, Cairne warned him against placing that power in Garrosh's hands. Thrall departed for Nagrand to heal the elements, leaving the Horde under a leader Cairne did not trust. As Garrosh ruled, Cairne became convinced that the Horde had crossed a line he could not ignore.
The old chieftain did not answer with intrigue. He challenged Garrosh to Mak'gora, accepting a duel to the death as the price of confronting him openly. According to the narration, Cairne proved the stronger combatant. The contest should have been decided by the two warriors facing one another, but another hand had already changed its course.
Chapter III
A VICTORY POISONED
Cairne did not know that Magatha Grimtotem had poisoned Gorehowl. A single wound was enough: the poison seized him, and Garrosh won the Mak'gora. The narration does not present that result as a true defeat of Cairne. It presents an honorable challenge undone by the poison Magatha had placed on the weapon.
News reached Thrall in Nagrand through a tauren messenger. He kept a piece of Cairne's broken spear, a reminder that he had not listened to his old friend. Cairne's son Baine later reclaimed Thunder Bluff. Garrosh survived the duel and held its formal victory, but Cairne's people, his city, and the warning he gave the Horde endured beyond him.
WHAT MATTERED
- Cairne and Thrall fought the centaur warbands together and led the tauren to a lasting home in Mulgore.
- Cairne challenged Garrosh to Mak'gora after concluding that the Horde's new leader had gone too far.
- Magatha Grimtotem poisoned Gorehowl; after Cairne's death, Baine reclaimed Thunder Bluff.

Thrall didn't listen. He left for Nagran to heal the elements. Gosh ruled the horde and Kairen believed he had gone too far.
So the old Torin challenged him to Magora, a duel to the death. Karen was stronger. But what he didn't know was that Maggatha Grim Totem had poisoned Gorehowl.
One scratch, the poison froze him. [clears throat] Gash won the Mora in Nagran. A torren messenger [music] brought through all the news.
