Summary

Varok Saurfang had already endured the loss of his son when he faced the last sacrifice of his own life. Dranosh fell at the Wrath Gate and was raised as the Lich King's champion. Years later, with the Horde turning against itself under Sylvanas Windrunner, Saurfang challenged her to Mak'gora despite expecting that he might not survive—and made his death a path forward for his people.

Chapter I

THE SON AT THE WRATH GATE

To understand Varok Saurfang's final challenge, the narration first returns to his son. Dranosh led Horde forces at the Wrath Gate, where he fell to Frostmourne. The Lich King raised him again as Deathbringer Saurfang, a champion of the Scourge rather than the son Varok had known.

When Varok came before what remained of Dranosh, he rejected any place among the Scourge. He had not come to bargain for power. He had come to recover his son's body. That loss stands behind the choice he would make years later, when the survival of the Horde demanded another confrontation with death.

Chapter II

A CHALLENGE WITHOUT ESCAPE

Years later, Saurfang believed the Horde was destroying itself under Sylvanas Windrunner. He challenged the Banshee Queen to Mak'gora despite expecting that he might not survive the duel. The purpose was larger than victory in combat: he chose to stand before the Horde when silence would have allowed its division to continue.

Saurfang struck Sylvanas across the eye, but she answered with a mysterious burst of power and killed him. His death exposed the final break between the warchief and the people she ruled. Sylvanas abandoned the Horde, leaving the challenger she had defeated to become the figure around whom others could gather.

Chapter III

HE DIED SO THEY WOULD NOT

Thrall, Anduin, and Zekhan carried Saurfang into Orgrimmar. The procession transformed the end of a duel into a public return: the warrior who had fallen outside the gates was brought among the people for whom he had made his choice.

The narration closes on the meaning of that sacrifice rather than the manner of his defeat. Saurfang entered a fight he did not expect to survive so the Horde would not have to destroy itself. Sylvanas took his life and left, but his challenge gave those behind him a chance to endure together.
